Arsenal defender White ruled out for ‘months’

Arsenal defender Ben White has been ruled out for “months” after having knee surgery, manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed.

The Gunners boss says White, 27, has been carrying a number of knocks and a decision was made over the international break for him to have an operation.

“It has been different kinds of struggles. It has never been the same thing, but we had to make a decision. He has not improved over the last few weeks, unfortunately,” said Arteta, whose side host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

“We know that Ben is going to push every boundary, but it got to the point where we have to protect the player and we decided to do the surgery. “He agreed with that and it is going to keep him out for a few months.”

Asked for a specific time frame, Arteta added: “We have to see how he reacts post-surgery. I don’t expect it to be half a year, but I cannot tell you exactly.”

Arsenal should have Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka available after the pair recovered from knocks suffered during the the draw at Chelsea, which led to their withdrawal from the England squad.

Defender Riccardo Calafiori is also in contention for Saturday’s game after a month out with a knee problem, but Takehiro Tomiyasu is still sidelined.

Pep Guardiola: Man City boss signs two-year contract extension

Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension that will take his time with Manchester City to more than a decade. The Spaniard’s hugely successful tenure has already included six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.

His overall win percentage at the club is 72%, with City averaging 2.45 goals per game.

Guardiola said in a statement it was “an honour, a pleasure and a privilege” to be at the club.

“This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club,” the 53-year-old said. “That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.” Guardiola said he was focused on winning even more trophies for the club.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue; allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the landscape of the game.”

Guardiola joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2016 and before that enjoyed stellar success managing Barcelona.

His current contract was due to expire at the end of the season but the 18 trophies he’s won meant the club were always going to fight to keep him. However, speculation about his future increased when it was confirmed director of football Txiki Begiristain would be leaving next year.

Begiristain, a long-time ally of Guardiola, is to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon’s Hugo Viana, a former Newcastle player. Manchester City are second in the Premier League but have lost their last four games in all competitions – a first for Guardiola as a manager. It has also been a difficult campaign off the field with the club facing 115 charges for alleged breaking of Premier League rules following an investigation into their financial affairs. Their next game is at home against Spurs on Saturday before Dutch side Feyenoord visit on Tuesday in the Champions League.

2026 UEFA World Cup qualifiers comfirmed

With the 2024 international calendar winding down and the latest UEFA Nations League drawing to a close, eyes are starting to veer towards North America and the 2026 World Cup.
Sure, there are Nations League finals and play-offs yet to play out, but the 2025 calendar is set to be dominated by qualification campaigns for the grandest spectacle in sport.

While the likes of CONCACAF and the AFC have opted for protracted qualifying processes involving multiple rounds, UEFA prefer cramming all the games within a few months. The overlapping of the Nations League is bound to facilitate some confusion next year, but England, who’ll have qualifiers and qualifiers only on their mind under Thomas Tuchel in 2025, are one of the nations with a singular focus.
It’s not long until the Three Lions learn their opponents and here’s everything you need to know about UEFA’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

UEFA’s 2026 World Cup qualifying draw is scheduled for Friday 13 December 2024. It’s set to get underway at noon CET (11:00 GMT) and will take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

With Russia still banned from competing, UEFA’s remaining 54 member associations will be drawn into 12 groups of four or five teams.
Groups 1-6 will contain four teams and begin qualifying in September 2025, while Groups 7-12 will contain five teams and start in March 2025. The four 2024/25 Nations League semi-finalists must be placed into a four-team group as they won’t be able to take part in qualifying next June.

Moreover, with the Nations League play-offs not taking place until next March, only four qualifying groups will be complete when the draw is made in December.

The qualifying schedule will be confirmed after the draw is made on 13 December, but we do know that teams will play each other home and away in a bid to top the group

The 12 group winners will qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup and the final four UEFA-designated spots will be decided via the play-offs. UEFA’s 2026 World Cup qualifying play-offs will take place in March 2026 with 16 nations competing.

The 12 group runners-up will be involved alongside the four best-ranked 2024/25 Nations League group winners who haven’t already qualified for the tournament.
The 16 nations that enter the play-offs will be drawn into four play-off paths, with four teams in each. The winners of each path will join the 12 qualifying group winners at the 2026 World Cup.

Ex-Manchester United star Juan Mata buys stake in San Diego FC

Former Spain international and World Cup winner Juan Mata has joined the ownership group of MLS expansion side San Diego FC, the club announced on Wednesday. Mata, currently playing with Australian A-League Men side Western Sydney Wanderers, is the first active international soccer player to hold an ownership stake in an MLS team, and joins Inter Miami CF co-owner David Beckham as only the second international player to be involved in MLS ownership.

San Diego, which will begin play next season, is owned by Egyptian businessman and club chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour, with the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, a Native American tribe whose reservation is located near El Cajon, California, also in the ownership group. Mansour also owns Danish club FC Nordsjælland and the Right to Dream Academy, a soccer academy which has facilities in Ghana, Egypt, and Denmark.

“We are absolutely delighted that Juan Mata has joined the club as a partner,” said Mansour. “Juan has been an active and long-term supporter of Right to Dream, and he shares our values of wanting to use football to deliver long-term social impact and change.” Mata, 36, founded the Common Goal initiative in 2017, pledging one percent of his salary to social causes. Common Goal is a partner of Right to Dream (RTD).

“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” said Mata in a statement released by the team. “The commitment of both this Club and Right to Dream to community impact, excellence, and a vision for long-term success aligns perfectly with my own values. I look forward to contributing my experience and passion for the game and working alongside everyone here to build a Club that inspires both on and off the pitch.”

Mata has enjoyed a glittering career as a player, one that, in addition to his World Cup exploits has seen him win Euro 2012 with Spain, and the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League with Chelsea.

“Juan’s addition to SDFC’s ownership group brings a global perspective and a commitment to positive social impact that perfectly aligns with our Club’s mission,” said SDFC CEO Tom Penn. “As a World Cup champion, Champions League winner, and a leader both on and off the field, Juan embodies excellence and purpose in everything he does. His passion for using football as a force for good resonates deeply with our vision for our SDFC and our community, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him to our Club.”

A product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, Mata began his professional career with Real Madrid Castilla before transferring to Valencia CF in 2007, where he won the Copa del Rey the following year. Mata signed for Chelsea in 2011, and in addition to the Champions League, he was part of sides that claimed the 2012 FA Cup, and the 2013 UEFA Europa League titles. He also earned Chelsea’s Player of the Year honors twice in that span.

Mata also enjoyed success upon joining Manchester United in January of 2014, winning the FA Cup, Europa League and EFL Cup during his nine seasons with the club. He later won league titles in Turkey with Galatasaray, and in Japan with Vissel Kobe.

He joined Western Sydney Wanderers in September of this year. Mata is a strategic investor in Alpine Racing Ltd, a Formula 1 team backed by Renault Group through Otro Capital, a private investment fund focused on sports, media, and entertainment ventures.

Steven Gerrard completes unlikely Aston Villa reunion in Saudi Arabia

Steven Gerrard completes unlikely Aston Villa reunion in Saudi Arabia

Steven Gerrard, the former Aston Villa manager, has moved to bring in his former assistant Michael Beale to join him at Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. Gerrard has been in charge of Al-Ettifaq since the summer of 2023 and has decided to reunite with Beale, with who he has worked previously at both Villa and Rangers.

Gerrard joined Villa from SPL giants Rangers three years ago when he replaced the sacked Dean Smith, but the Liverpool legend was out of work after spending just a year at Villa Park. During that time, Beale – who had initially joined Gerrard in Birmingham – left to take up the reins at Queens Park Rangers and then made a return to Ibrox as manager in his own right.

Beale’s last job was before Christmas last year, when he was made Sunderland boss following the club’s decision to part with Tony Mowbray. Beale, though, lasted just 63 days and won four of his 12 matches in charge before the Black Cats decided to sack him in February. He has been out of football since then, but talkSPORT now reports that Gerrard has moved to take him out to Saudi Arabia.

Beale, upon leaving Sunderland, told Inside the Academy: “Around a couple of the moves I’ve had as a manager, I saw loads of snakes and people come out of the woodwork – and I didn’t like it. It made me uncomfortable, and perhaps I would’ve made better decisions if those people weren’t around, but that’s for another time. Ultimately, I’m very, very fortunate that I’ve been a manager at QPR, Glasgow Rangers, 52,000 (fans), Sunderland, 44,000 in the Championship.

“I’ve worked in the Premier League, I’ve worked in Serie A and I’ve worked in over 60 games in Europe across the Europa League and Champions League. So I have 257 games in the system, 77 games as a manager and at 44 years of age I feel like I’m at the start of my career. In that sense, I still feel like I’m a young coach.”

It’s estimated Gerrard is on £15m a year at Al Ettifaq, who have endured a poor beginning to the new season. They won their first three games, but have since gone seven without a win and have taken two points from those matches. Gerrard has the likes of Moussa Dembele, Demarai Gray, Jack Hendry and Georginio Wijnaldum in his squad.

Dani Olmo’s games for Spain, Barça are now must-watch affairs

Dani Olmo’s games for Spain, Barça are now must-watch affairs

It’s time to introduce you to the man with the most insolent and provocative hairstyle in the world of football. His name is Dani Olmo and he’s a player of devastating, catalytic creative impact for both Barcelona and Spain. I’ll get back to his tonsorial taunting in just a second but, first, the context.

Olmo seems to carry a Bermuda Triangle effect around him on soccer pitches. Every opponent knows he’s the jack-in-the-box creative threat who’ll spring their defensive traps, who’ll open up an apparently opportunity-free midfield and then do rapier damage where others see nothing but dead-ends, impenetrable walls and over-congestion. Every opposition coach wants his players to shut Olmo down. To mark him more tightly than a mollusc on a rock. Zero creative space. Yet up he pops. Perpetually.

Olmo’s initial task-in-hand, given he possesses vision, daring, fine technique plus laser-guided shooting and passing, is to carve out free space for himself. Given that he’s almost always the opposition team’s “most wanted,” “be-on-the-lookout-for” player that shouldn’t be easy: sometimes not even possible. Yet, I stress … up he pops. The Bermuda Triangle thing is that he’s gliding along, in plain sight, amidst a clutch of players then, suddenly, it would appear, none of the rival midfielders or defenders can see him at all. He vanishes.

And then he promptly re-appears in a lovely patch of green space — unmarked, unobserved, unmolested. Seconds later, a teammate will slide a simple pass into Olmo’s territory and, with an agile flip of his body direction, or by letting he ball roll in front of him — without a controlling touch — the 26-year-old Croatia-educated Catalan will unleash a killer-pass or shot.

Just like he did for Spain’s winning goal against Denmark last Friday — the one which guaranteed the Nations League holders will have second-leg home advantage in next March’s playoff to reach the 2025 semis and, potentially, become the first country to retain that trophy.

The haircut? The tonsorial taunting? I’ll explain. Olmo, just in case you haven’t seen him lately, dyed his hair peroxide blond a few months ago — as if to say to opposition markers on the pitch: ‘Look, look … HERE I AM! Can’t you see me? Really?!?’

From Jean Harlow via Marilyn Monroe or, I feel obliged to mention, Rutger Hauer as the replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner, the peroxide blonde look across generations has always screamed: ‘LOOK AT ME … notice me! I want your attention!!’ Yet it’s still the case that Olmo’s ingenuity, daring, and relentless pacing around the most dangerous third of the pitch regularly combine to leave him unattended, in big free space and ready to do the most malicious damage to those who are supposed to be extinguishing his threat. It really must drive opposition coaches mad.

I rest my case on the taunting nature of his hair-colour choice and, honestly, you have to love him for his “I’m going to leave clues … catch me if you can!” insolence. His record, since turning his head into a shimmering warning sign for would-be spoilsport rivals has been pretty sensational.

For Barcelona, he’s scored five times in six matches — a goal every 63 minutes. For Spain, his three goals and three assists in the last six months amount to a goal contribution every 95 minutes: and, I believe, crucially, he did not play in the only matches Spain have lost (Colombia and Scotland) since Luis De la Fuente took over La Roja nearly 30 matches ago.

Within those Spain stats are moments of ecstasy which demonstrate his huge importance. Olmo was recovering from injury when the European Championship started. But, from his first appearance against Albania, he provided the winning goal assist. Then, once back in the team following Toni Kroos’ ruinous and vindictive challenge that forced Pedri out of the tournament, Olmo scored the quarterfinal opener against Germany and made the last-minute winner for Mikel Merino. In the semifinal, defeating France, he was the one who cracked home Spain’s winner — their second goal in four blistering minutes having gone 1-0 down and looked like they were in trouble.

By the final, against England, it was Olmo’s run and dummy that fatally exposed Kyle Walker and allowed Nico Williams to put Spain one-nil up. Then, late on, Olmo was in that perennial Bermuda Triangle of green space he creates, unmarked, to make the pass down the middle towards Mikel Oyarzabal, whose one-two pass with Marc Cucurella led to the winning goal. Olmo to the rescue, always.

There was another key in the final, but because the modern way is to think only about the goals and the creative spectacle many outside Spain and England will already have forgotten it. To explain it properly, it’s worth going back to the fact that Olmo left his native Barcelona to move to Zagreb when he was 16 and underwent a competitive indoctrination: He had it drilled into him that winning is everything. And that to win, you always need to want it more than the enemy. And then you go out and prove that fact.

Back in 2022 when I asked him whether it had taken extraordinary maturity to choose to leave Barcelona’s academy as a teenager and move to Croatia, Olmo told me: “I can imagine that’s what those who don’t know me, or my story, believe. “But I had clarity. I was certain this would be a good path for me, a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and a project no other team had offered me.” Then, early at the Euros, he expanded on the appreciation for what life in Croatia (six years at Dinamo Zagreb, nine trophies) imbued in him. “Something I learned from the Croatian mentality is to never give up and to know that, until the referee blows his whistle, there’s always still a chance to win,” he said. “It’s in those final minutes of pressure that I believe the most in myself.”

So it was in the 90th minute of that glorious final in Berlin, when Marc Guéhi headed towards what seemed like an open goal for what also seemed sure to be the equaliser, it was Olmo who appeared, as if from nowhere, to leap up and head the ball off the goal-line. His convulsive, joyous, defiant reaction, immediately after Declan Rice headed the rebound over the bar was probably as ecstatic as any celebration Olmo has given after scoring a goal — that’s how important the moment was.

And he was ready. Again, Olmo’s explained some of these ideas to me in depth. He is a big believer in the power of his mind, and being prepared for any high stress, but high-potential, situation which football might throw at him. “It always helps to visualise beforehand so that when you’re on the pitch you’re familiar with situations,” he said. “Because you’ve already lived them, you’ve already seen them before, in your mind’s eye, so when a threat or opportunity actually arrives on the pitch you already know what to do. “Of course, in the game it’s another world, it’s different, but if you’ve ‘seen’ it before it all helps.”

This guy is so good, so supernatural at finding space, and then so punishing, ruthless and thrilling in what he does with that freedom that I really believe he transcends club or international team loyalties. Go out of your way to find him. Watch him. Delight in his technique his determination, his perpetual ability to instantly create calm and intelligence out of chaos and madness.Olmo is on your screens every week — do not, on any account, miss an opportunity to watch him.

England can win World Cup under Thomas Tuchel – Lee Carsley

England can win World Cup under Thomas Tuchel – Lee Carsley

Incoming England manager Thomas Tuchel has all the tools he needs to win the 2026 World Cup but finding the right balance for the team will be key, interim coach Lee Carsley said.

Carsley’s six-game stint in charge of England ended with Sunday’s 5-0 win over Ireland that secured promotion to the Nations League’s top tier.

Tuchel, who previously managed Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, was appointed last month and will take charge in January.

Former manager Gareth Southgate led England to a World Cup semifinal in 2018 but Carsley thinks Tuchel can go all the way in 2026 at the tournament in North America.

England’s men’s side have not won the World Cup, or any other major trophy, since 1966.

“I think we are in a good position to do that,” the 50-year-old told British media. “We have the talent to do it.

“I have been lucky now to be at the last couple of World Cups and the timing of the players being in form, physically and mentally, at the right time, picking the right squad.

“We have got all of the tools. We just need to play them in the order … We just have to find that balance.”

Carsley, who is returning to his role as manager of the under-21 side, handed out eight debuts during his stint in charge including Curtis Jones and Noni Madueke.

Warriors lose to Cameroon in final 2025 Afcon qualifying game

Zimbabwe suffered their first loss in the 2025 Afcon Qualifiers Group J after going down 2-1 to Cameroon on Tuesday.

The Warriors lost their final Group J encounter despite a spirited second half performance.
The Indomitable Lions dominated the early pace and created a couple of chances through Frank Magri and captain Vincent Aboubakar.

The hosts’ dominance continued through into the second quarter hour and they finally opened the scoring on minute 18 courtesy of Aboubakar’s fine effort.

Kevin Nkoudou doubled the lead five minutes later as Zimbabwe’s shaky defence failed to cope with the mounting pressure.
The Warriors only started coming out of their shell after the half hour mark with Khama Billiat missing from an unmissable position.
The visitors continued to create more meaningful chances in the second half, with substitute Terrence Dzvukamanja scoring in the 73rd minute to pull one back.

The SuperSport United striker could have secured the equaliser eight minutes later but was denied by the post.

Billiat also had a glorious chance coming his way after catching Andre Onana off his line later on but his long-range effort went inches over.

Dzvukamanja found the back of the net again in the added time, but this time the effort was controversially ruled out for an offside.
Cameroon, on the other end, registered a couple of chances but Arubi delivered some great saves to deny them a third goal.

The match ended with no more goals as the Indomitable Lions win the group with 14 points, while the Warriors follow in second with nine.
Kenya, who played a goalless draw against bottom-placed Namibia on Tuesday, take the third place.

Real Madrid star Federico Valverde reveals he once had plans of joining Arsenal

REAL MADRID star Federico Valverde revealed he decided to join Arsenal before being turned down by the club. The midfielder has been a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side for the past few years, but he could have been playing in the Premier League. He trained with Arsenal ten years ago and felt at home at London Colney.

Valverde, 26, was welcomed by the likes of Emi Martinez and Alexis Sanchez and he claims he saw a future at the club – only to be rejected by the Gunners. He told Marca: “I was 16. I said: ‘That’s it. This is my club. I’m going to grow here. “In Uruguay, the Premier League was watched a lot. I imagined a future there. “I enjoyed it and I trained with spectacular players. “I don’t know if he’ll remember me, but Dibu [Emi Martinez] was one of the ones who helped me the most in everything, along with [Hector] Bellerín, Alexis [Sanches] and [Santi] Cazorla. I didn’t know English and they had to explain all the work to me.”

Valverde was playing for Uruguayn side Penarol at the time and he went on to join Real Madrid two years later. He has 275 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring 24 times, while winning plenty of silverware. Valverde has three LaLiga titles to his name as well as two Champions League victories. He was also subject to a £51million bid from Liverpool last summer, which was rejected.

Sudan qualify for AFCON 2025 despite ongoing Civil War.

Sudan qualify for AFCON 2025 despite ongoing Civil War.

Sudan have qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The northeast African nation secured qualification after their goalless draw with Group F winners Angola on Monday. Second-placed Niger also won, 2-1 over Ghana, but missed qualification by a single point.

It is a remarkable achievement for Sudan, a nation of over 48million people which has been wracked by civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.

Last month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Sudanese population were trapped in a “nightmare of violence, hunger, disease and displacement” and said almost 25m people in the country were in need of humanitarian assistance.

Sudan’s head coach is Ghanaian James Kwesi Appiah, who twice coached Ghana and was sacked from the position in 2020. His home country failed to qualify for AFCON on Friday after they drew 1-1 with Angola.

Sudan’s team is comprised solely of players based at African clubs, many of whom play for Sudanese rivals Al Hilal and Al Merrikh. Both are temporarily playing in the Mauritanian league due to the unstable political situation in Sudan.

Sudan won AFCON when they hosted the tournament in 1970, but have advanced beyond the group stage of the competition only once and have qualified for just three of the most recent 24 editions of the tournament.

Morocco will host the next one which is scheduled to begin on December 21, 2025 and run until January 18, 2026.

Rodrigo Bentancur: Tottenham midfielder handed seven-game ban for Heung-Min Son racial slur.

Rodrigo Bentancur: Tottenham midfielder handed seven-game ban for Heung-Min Son racial slur.

Bentancur was charged by the FA on September 12 with an alleged misconduct breach in relation to a media interview, which emerged in June and showed Bentancur being asked by the host of Canal 10 to show the shirt of a Spurs player.

Former Juventus player Bentancur replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.” While an apology from Bentancur was swiftly forthcoming, due to this being an “aggravated breach”, an independent regulatory commission panel were required to either uphold the FA charge or dismiss the case.

The independent regulatory commission panel upheld the charge and Bentancur is set to sit out Tottenham’s next seven domestic fixtures, but will be able to feature for the club in upcoming Europa League matches with Roma and Rangers.

An FA spokesperson said: “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.

“It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It was further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

“Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing.”

Son said he and Bentancur remained “brothers” and “nothing had changed” after the Uruguayan immediately apologised to him, admitting he had “made a mistake”.

Tottenham travel to Manchester City next on Saturday November 23.

Man Utd boost as Gyokeres rejects Bayern Munich offer

Manchester United have received a boost in their hopes of signing Viktor Gyokeres next summer after the Sweden goal machine rejected the chance of joining Bayern Munich. It has been reported in Germany in recent days that Bayern plan to make a big money move for Gyokeres at the end of the season.

The plan is for Gyokeres to be an understudy to Harry Kane for the 2025-26 season before the Englishman moves on in the summer of 2026 to make way for the Swede to succeed him. However, Gyokeres has made it clear that the club he joins next will have to be one where he is immediately a regular starter.

The Sporting Lisbon star also noted that he will not leave his club during the January transfer window.“I want to finish this season at Sporting. I love it here”.
“New club? We will see when the time comes. I want to play, that’s crucial… and there will be also other factors.”

Gyokeres is one of Europe’s most wanted strikers and there has been intense speculation that new Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim will bring him with him from Sporting Lisbon.

Gyokeres is the hottest striking property around right now and has made an incredible start to the new season, already scoring 23 goals in 17 games in all competitions.
This follows on from his brilliant form from last season for Sporting where he scored 43 goals in all competitions for his club.
The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also very interested in Gyokeres.

Gyokeres has a €100 million release clause in his contract and is expected to be sold by Sporting at the end of the 2024-25 season.
He scored again on Saturday for Sweden in their 2-1 win over Slovakia in the UEFA Nations League.
