Barcelona taking special measures to ensure Lamine Yamal’s return for Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona taking special measures to ensure Lamine Yamal’s return for Spanish Super Cup

There is a lot at stake for Barcelona heading into the second half of their ongoing season. Despite promising early signs, the Catalan giants have had a great collapse of sorts in recent weeks. Unfortunately for Barcelona, they will not get the luxury of having a lot of time to figure out their problems.

That is because, heading into the first month of the new year, La Blaugrana will already be expected to compete for titles again. In January, after the first round of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona will travel to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Spanish Super Cup.

With the Catalan giants set to play against Athletic Club in the semi-final of the tournament, a lot will be at stake for Hansi Flick and his men. It would present them an opportunity to compete for their first possible title of the season, and it could be one that would allow the team to take on other challenges with a rejuvenated spark.

Moreover, according to AS, that match could end up presenting Lamine Yamal to make his return from injury. At the moment, the report suggests that the player’s current intention is to be available for that game and end up playing close to around 20 or 25 minutes in that encounter if his ankle gives off positive sensations.

For now, the initial forecast was that the winger would be missing close to a month of action following the injury to his ankle that he suffered against Leganes. Since then, he has been working to recover as soon as possible, and there is hope that he can return in time for the game against Athletic Club over in Saudi Arabia.

However, irrespective of how he feels by the time of the semi-final, Yamal will be a part of the squad that travels to Saudi Arabia. Even if he does not participate against Athletic Club, there is a chance that he could recover in time for the final if Barcelona can manage to win the first game without his help.

Despite the fact that Barcelona have been incredibly dependent on their young star this season, it is something that must change. Hansi Flick must already be aware of this, and the German head coach will definitely want to figure out that unwanted dependency as soon as possible.

10 Arsenal matches Bukayo Saka could miss as Mikel Arteta confirms injury hammer blow.

10 Arsenal matches Bukayo Saka could miss as Mikel Arteta confirms injury hammer blow.

Arsenal are due to be without Bukayo Saka for a number of weeks, with manager Mikel Arteta working out a plan to keep winning without the England star.

Saka was forced off during the first half of Arsenal’s win at Crystal Palace on Saturday, where Gabriel Jesus scored two of the team’s five goals. “It’s not looking good, he’s going to be out for many weeks,” Arteta told reporters ahead of the team’s next match against Ipswich.

“I’m putting some ideas together [to deal with the absence],” he added. “I haven’t got there yet but I have a few. I want to speak with them as well and take it in a positive way.

“It means we’re going to be different. We went through the period with Martin [Odegaard] and the period with five, six defenders missing. We’re looking at it with positive energy.”

An absence of a few weeks can mean different times at different stages of the season, but this just so happens to be one of the busiest periods for Arsenal. If Saka is absent until the end of January, that will mean he misses 10 games in all competitions.

The first three of those all fall within the space of eight days around the turn of the year. Ipswich visit the Emirates Stadium on December 27, with Arsenal kicking off 2025 with trips to Brentford on New Year’s Day and Brighton three days after that.

After that comes a pair of cup ties. The first leg of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final with Newcastle falls on January 7, with an FA Cup third round match against Manchester United five days later.

Arsenal will then return to Premier League action with a big one, taking on Spurs in the second North London Derby of the campaign on January 15. Aston Villa visit the Emirates Stadium on the 18th, with Champions League Dinamo Zagreb finishing off that run of five home games in succession.

Mikel Arteta’s side will round off January with trips to Wolves in the league and Girona in Europe. They’ll hope to have Saka back after then, though, as February begins with a home match against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

With Raheem Sterling also injured, Arsenal will need to decide whether they need to dip into the transfer market. They’ve already come through a period without Martin Odegaard, with the captain missing two months through injury in the autumn, but Saka’s absence could prove problematic in a very different way.

Matches Bukayo Saka could miss in December and January: Ipswich (H) – December 27. Brentford (A) – January 1. Brighton (A) – January 4. Newcastle (H) – January 7. Manchester United (H) – January 12, Tottenham (H) – January 15, Aston Villa (H) – January 18, Dinamo Zagreb (H) – January 22, Wolves (A) – January 25, Girona (A) – January 29

Sheffield United finally confirm £100m takeover as new owners make Premier League vow.

His 18-month deal expires in June and the pair will make agreeing a new contract with Wilder one of their priorities. Their immediate focus is on giving Wilder all the support he needs in next month’s transfer window to strengthen their promotion push.

Wilder has guided the Blades to the top of the Championship after overseeing a complete overhaul of the club following last season’s traumatic relegation from the Premier League and Rosen and Eltoukhy have pledged to boost his transfer kitty. They have approved the club’s plans to make two loan signings and will also provide money for any permanent deals.

Rosen, who is a financier from Ohio, and Eltoukhy, who is a healthcare entrepreneur from California, are delighted to finally be in control. They met Wilder at last month’s Steel City derby win over Sheffield Wednesday at Bramall Lane and felt Prince Abdullah was delaying the completion of their takeover.

They said in a statement: “We’re honoured and humbled to become the new owners of this historic football club. “We’re excited to embark on this journey and our work begins today to deliver long-term success for Sheffield United over a sustained period of time.

Maresca ‘absolutely happy’ as title-chasing Chelsea drop points in Everton draw

The Blues could have leapfrogged Liverpool into top spot with victory at Goodison Park before the leaders kicked off at Tottenham Hotspur later in the day.

But instead Chelsea saw their eight-match winning run end as they failed to score for the first time since October.

And with Liverpool winning 6-3 in an extraordinary encounter in north London, it meant Chelsea ended the day in second place — four points behind the Reds and having played a game more than the table-toppers.

Maresca – speaking before Liverpool’s victory was confirmed — said: “I am absolutely happy. I just said to the players I am more happy today than I was after the Brentford game (which they won 2-1 last weekend).
“The reason why was I was quite worried about this game: tricky game, tricky stadium, tricky team.”

He added: “Defensively they are top, they are one of the five best teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets so you struggle to create chances against them.

“It was not an easy game and you have to learn how to play different games. Football is not only just how good you play on the ball, it is how you defend and how you deal with that.”
This was Everton’s first match since the Friedkin Group (TFG) completed their takeover of the Liverpool club, with new executive chairman Marc Watts among the Goodison crowd on Sunday.

This was struggling Everton’s second successive goalless draw following last week’s 0-0 at Arsenal but Toffees boss Sean Dyche, out of contract at the end of the season, knows it is wins alone that will impress the club’s US-based owners.

Everton have won just three of their 16 league matches so far this season, with the Toffees four points above the relegation zone.
“It wasn’t my only goal (to send TFG home with a point) to do that but it is a nice add-on,” said Dyche.

“We’ve had a good meeting with them, they seem really good, really serious people.
“People talk about my own position — win games, they have made it clear. They are supportive of my role, what I’ve done here and what I hope we do. We have got to win games, though. I’m not naive.”

Osimhen: Napoli star drops transfer hint as Man United and Chelsea prepare €75million bid

Osimhen: Napoli star drops transfer hint as Man United and Chelsea prepare €75million bid

Napoli-owned forward Victor Osimhen has sparked transfer speculation with a new comment about his future, Soccernet.ng reports.

Recent reports circulating in local and international media suggest that Manchester United and Chelsea are preparing to test Napoli’s will with a €75 million bid for the Nigerian striker.

Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been a pivotal figure for the Turkish giants in their impressive European and domestic campaigns.

The 25-year-old, speaking after Gala’s 5-1 victory against Kayserispor, expressed his satisfaction with life in Turkey, hinting at his adaptability and the bonds he has formed with teammates.

This comes amid increasing interest from top Premier League sides. The Red Devils and Chelsea are reportedly in the race for Osimhen’s signature as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Both clubs are said to be willing to offer €75 million for the striker, though Napoli are likely to demand a higher fee given his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting forwards.

Osimhen’s current loan stint has reignited his form, with his performances in the domestic league drawing praise. Despite ongoing uncertainties with Napoli earlier this season, the Nigerian international remains one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market.

While his next destination is yet to be known, the Super Eagles talisman is firing on all cylinders in Turkey, having recently notched two goals in his Galatasaray’s away clash against Kayserispor, extending his goal tally to 12 in all competition.

Arne Slot makes Mohamed Salah claim as Liverpool boss praises player who was key to gameplan

Arne Slot makes Mohamed Salah claim as Liverpool boss praises player who was key to gameplan

Arne Slot hailed Liverpool’s 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur as one of their best attacking performances since he took over as Reds head coach as he singled out two players in particular. Both Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz scored braces against Spurs, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were also on the scoresheet.

The victory ensured that Liverpool would move four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, retaining first place at Christmas while still boasting a game in hand.

And Slot paid tribute to both Salah and Szoboszlai in particular after his side came out on top in the nine-goal thriller in North London.

“It was very good, maybe it was our best performance away from home,” he said. “Although I really liked what I saw against Man Utd as well, that was total dominance.

Slot admitted that Szoboslai’s performance, as he also claimed an assist, was one of his best since the Dutchman took over as Liverpool head coach.

“Of course I haven’t seen all of his performances because it is my first year and his second,” he said. “I just referred to the Man Utd game, I think he was outstanding over there as well.

“If you score so many goals that is always what stands out, but last week for example against Fulham, if you look at the work rate he did over there. It was a very good performance by him.

Meanwhile, Slot also revealed what has impressed him most about working with Salah after the Egyptian overtook Billy Liddell to become the fourth-highest scorer in Liverpool’s history, and also became the first Premier League player ever to record double-figures in both goals and assists before Christmas.

Moncada admits Milan made attempts for Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.

Moncada admits Milan made attempts for Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.

It is rare for Geoffrey Moncada to communicate much about ongoing things at AC Milan, but today, it has come to light that he made attempts for two stars before they moved to Real Madrid.

The mercato is often difficult in many ways, whether due to planning, finances, registration or a mix of all three. Then comes the other big difficulty – everyone else, and this is often the case with younger players.

In recent years, the value of Under-21 players has soared with clubs more willing to invest in potential now than they may have been in years gone, and Real Madrid have been prolific with this, often landing the most-hyped young talents on the planet.

Regardless of interest from elsewhere, Los Blancos have normally always got the better of others if they hold the same interest in a player as another club, and Moncada revealed that Milan have been a victim of this to Harvard Business School, as Milan News relays.

Vincent Kompany riffs on differences in coaching for Bayern Munich in Germany vs. coaching in England

Vincent Kompany riffs on differences in coaching for Bayern Munich in Germany vs. coaching in England

RSC Anderlecht, winning Premier League promotion with Burnley, and then getting relegated with Burnley back down to the English Football Championship League — it’s not quite exactly the career sheet that transitions into the Bayern Munich job, but that is exactly what happened for Vincent Kompany.

The rumor mill wheels were turning fast when Bayern announced Thomas Tuchel would be leaving the club at the end of last season, but Kompany’s name really did not emerge as a prime replacement candidate until after other candidates had turned the job down. Julian Nagelsmann wanted to extend his contract with the German national team, Ralf Rangnick wanted to stay with the Austria national team, and Xabi Alonso wanted to stay with Bayer Leverkusen. Former Bayern and Germany manager Hansi Flick also had his heart set on Barcelona, and that’s where he wound up.

Fast forward to now, and Kompany has Bayern sitting atop the Bundesliga table and well within reach of automatic qualification for the Champions League knockouts with the new format that has been introduced for this season onward. It certainly has not been perfect for the Belgian manager, but he has, for intents and purposes, adjusted quite well to making the jump from Burnley to Bayern.
“That’s an interesting question that we’ve often discussed before. Many clubs in England do things a little differently. I already played in Germany as a player, so I know the system here. I have a good role here,” Kompany replied when he was asked about the differences between managing in Germany versus England in the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig

“Many discussions with the players can be spread over several parties. I talk to the players about their development, Christoph and Max talk to the agents and the players about contractual matters. It’s important to speak with one voice and be on the same page. We can complement each other well,” Kompany continued in his assessment of the differences between managing in Germany and England.

The front office structure at Bayern and in Germany is certainly a little bit different than it is in the Premier League or Championship in England.
Back when the summer transfer window was still open, Kompany, Christoph Freund and Max Eberl had made it a point to have the latter two be the ones to field questions about player transfer rumors and contract situations in press conferences as opposed to having Kompany answer all of them. The manager wanted to focus solely on the football and have the sporting director and board member for sport take care of the public conversations about transfer rumors — something that really is not seen in England as the managers take the brunt of those particular questions.

Barça free fall confirmed as Atléti cement title credentials

Barça free fall confirmed as Atléti cement title credentials

BARCELONA, Spain — Atlético Madrid were 10 points behind Barcelona at the start of November but will end the year three points clear of them at the top of LaLiga, and with a game in hand after Alexander Sørloth’s 96th-minute winner capped a remarkable game at the Olympic Stadium between the league’s top two.

Rodrigo De Paul’s strike had cancelled out Pedri’s opener in Barcelona on Saturday, but it was the home side who were pushing for the win late on. The board revealing six minutes of added time was greeted with roars from the local supporters as Barça, led by the brilliant Pedri, threw everything forward in search of a winner. But those six minutes ended in despair, the only roars now coming from the few hundred away fans up high in the second tier, as Atlético made it 12 wins in a row in all competitions to firmly cement their title credentials.

Barça, meanwhile, are in free fall. They cannot even string two consecutive victories together, let alone 12. After taking 33 points from a possible 36 to start the season, Hansi Flick’s team wilted and have taken just six from the last 21.

There are different theories for their capitulation. Their high line, so successful, has been put under the microscope. Atlético had little luck here until Sørloth’s goal, though, which exploited that line. De Paul carried the ball forward after Barça had given it away. The Barça defence stepped up to play offside, but they had not taken into account the run from wing-back Nahuel Molina, who collected De Paul’s pass and crossed for Sørloth.
Tiredness is another theory. 10 players have already clocked up over 1,500 minutes of action this season and Raphinha told ESPN in the week that fatigue has been a factor in Barça winning what is now just once in their last seven league games. But they didn’t seem especially tired against Atlético in a game they started with intensity and dominated for long periods.

That gives Flick, who served the second of a two-game touchline ban against Atlético, some hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. Dropped points have often come when they’ve least expected them — they lost at home to Las Palmas and Leganés, too, and have now worryingly lost three in a row in the league at the Olympic Stadium — while they have handled themselves well against the bigger sides. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have all been beaten.

Atlético may have joined that list if Barça’s finishing had been better. Gavi headed wide, Iñigo Martínez and Fermín López fired straight at Jan Oblak, Pedri blazed over and Raphinha hit the bar. That was all before De Paul’s equaliser, teed up by Marc Casadó when the midfielder failed to deal with a Julián Álvarez cross. At 1-1, further chances came for substitute Dani Olmo, Raphinha and Pedri, but either the target was missed or Oblak stood tall.

Barça ended the game with 19 shots and an xG of 3.04.
“It’s obvious we have a great goalkeeper,” Atlético coach Diego Simeone said after the game.
“Jan was hugely important.”
Atlético’s chances were few and far between. They had zero shots in the first half. De Paul’s goal was their first on target. Pablo Barrios did have a good one, denied by a fine Iñaki Peña save, but as six minutes of stoppage time went up, it was Barça who believed they could get the winner.

“We played a brilliant match,” Flick said.
“It was really unbelievable how we played. This is how I want to see my team. Our style, how we want to play, it was really great. I am proud.
“It shows also that Atlético is an experienced team and they [were] just waiting for this and for them, it’s enough.”
Flick’s comments do Atlético some disservice. He had spoken pre-match about how dangerous they are late in matches. They have now scored 13 goals after the 80th minute to either win or draw games in all competitions, including a 94th-minute winner from Antoine Griezmann as they came from behind to beat Sevilla 4-3 just two weeks ago.

Doing it at Barça, though, does feel different. This was their first win in Barcelona since 2006 in the league and their first ever in the city under Simeone. It’s no wonder the bench poured onto the pitch after Sørloth’s winner.
Atlético have now won seven in a row in LaLiga and will end 2024 as the top team in Spain regardless of how Real Madrid fare against Sevilla on Sunday. Their numbers are as impressive as Barça’s are depressing.
Simeone’s twice led them to the title before, toppling Barça and Real Madrid in the process, could it be happening again?
“I won’t go down that path, not at all,” he said typically coy manner when quizzed on the side’s chances of winning the league

He will be disappointed there is now a winter break. For Barça, on the other hand, it comes at a good time. It will give Lamine Yamal time to recover from an ankle injury — they have still not won a game when he’s not started — and others time to rest, like Pedri, who was superb against Atlético.

Not only did he score Barça’s goal, but he played two brilliant passes to set up Raphinha chances and generally dictated the game. It was a statement performance from a player who seems to have overcome the injury problems that plagued his previous two seasons.

“It’s really good to see that he’s now on this level,” Flick said.
“How he played was fantastic, the goal was unbelievably good. When you see him now on the pitch, he’s also coaching the other players around him. This is good. It’s the next step for him. He’s 22-years-old and he’s on the right way.”

Pedri deserved more, but instead, he ended the game slouched on the pitch as Atlético celebrated in front of their fans what could prove a huge three points in what is developing into a fascinating three-way title race.
“We knew how to defend and suffer against a team that plays good football,” Simeone said.
“The changes gave us strength in the final stages and the counterattack to win it was exquisite. It gave us the chance to win a game that Barça probably deserved a little more from.”

Mbappe’s lawyer accuses PSG of attempting to ‘escape the rules of football’ over unpaid dues case

Kylian Mbappe’s legal dispute with Paris Saint-Germain has been quite the eye-catcher this season.

The legal battle revolves around €55 million unpaid dues that Mbappe is demanding from PSG. Although LFP has made two rulings favouring Mbappe, PSG are still yet to pay the amount and continue to find legal measures to escape the payment.

Delphine Verheyden, Mbappe’s lawyer, has openly criticized PSG’s tactics, stating (h/t AS), “PSG wants to escape the rules of football. It is willing to tear down the system rather than meet its obligations.
“If the governing bodies do not protect contracts and their regulations, we are sending a strong signal saying: ‘You can trample on the players.’”

She added that only €25 million would directly benefit Mbappe, with the remainder allocated to social security and taxes.
Verheyden accuses PSG of leveraging different legal avenues to sidestep their financial responsibilities.

“PSG has taken the LFP to the Paris Court of Justice, arguing that it is not competent to force a club to respect the commitments it has made. This is becoming a much bigger problem than my client’s case. It could blow up the whole system,” she warns.

Despite the capability to seek broader legal recourse for image damage or psychological harassment, Verheyden’s focus remains solely on securing the owed payments for Mbappe.
“My aim is not to punish PSG. Otherwise, we would have gone to court a long time ago for damage to the image or psychological harassment. All Kylian Mbappe wants is to be paid what he is owed,” she added.

In a new twist, Verheyden has appealed to the French Football Federation (FFF), hoping to enforce the LFP’s decisions and potentially invoke sporting sanctions by involving UEFA, which could affect PSG’s eligibility for continental competitions if the debts are not settled.

The matter is now headed to the French labor court, where both parties will present their arguments, a process that could extend over several years.

Luis Diaz ‘names next club’ if Liverpool fail to overcome obstacles in contract talks.

Luis Diaz ‘names next club’ if Liverpool fail to overcome obstacles in contract talks.

Luis Diaz is keen to move to Barcelona if the talks over a new contract at Liverpool continue to stall, according to reports in Spain.
Diaz has emerged as one of Arne Slot’s most reliable players this season, contributing nine goals and three assists in 22 appearances across all competitions. His durability is a particular asset, having featured in all but two of Liverpool’s matches after playing in 37 out of 38 Premier League games last season.

Slot has used him in the central striker role at times this season and is keen to tie the Colombia international down to a new contract. While the focus for the Reds has naturally been on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who are out of contract in June, there have been conversations with Diaz’s representatives too.

Those talks are not as urgent, given Diaz is under contract until June 2027 at present, but interest from other clubs may speed up the process. Spanish outlet Antena 2 report that Liverpool are encountering ‘obstacles’ in their bid to extend his deal.

The 27-year-old is not agitating for a move, but is said to be ‘positioning himself’ to join Barcelona when he does leave Merseyside. He would reportedly ‘prefer’ to join Barca, but Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are also in the picture.

Diaz is valued at around €80million (£66m), which should be enough to ward off Barca’s interest, given their financial situation. Barcelona have also been credited with interest in Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, despite already boasting Raphinha and Lamine Yamal in wide positions.

For the time being, Diaz remains key to the Liverpool project under Slot and has no reason to look elsewhere, with the team top of the Premier League and Champions League and into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Speaking after the 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, Slot spoke about how he sees Diaz’s role in the side. Asked where he would play now Diogo Jota is back fit, Slot replied: “People said a week ago that Darwin Nunez’s numbers aren’t high enough but he has now got a goal and an assist.

Diaz has 33 goals and 16 assists in 120 appearances for Liverpool altogether – similar numbers to those he put up at Porto. He will hope this season will end in silverware following a brilliant start under Slot’s management.

Olmo and more miss out: Hansi Flick considering ‘revolution’ in attack for Barcelona vs Atlético

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is giving consideration to a major shake-up to his line-up, for the club’s upcoming meeting with Atlético Madrid.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Friday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

Barcelona, of course, are currently in the thick of preparations for one of the club’s most important fixtures of the season to date.

This comes in the form of a top-of-the-table La Liga showdown with the aforementioned Atlético Madrid, on Saturday night.

In the days leading up to the clash, much of the chatter has centered on the personnel plans of Hansi Flick, with Barca set to be without the services of star attacker Lamine Yamal tomorrow evening.

And, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, then Flick may well make use of the opportunity to ‘revolutionise’ his frontline.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, the German tactician is giving serious consideration to setting up as follows: Raphinha on the right wing, Gavi in the attacking midfield role, and Fermín López on the left.

Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, would maintain his starting berth up top.
Such moves would see Dani Olmo drop out, with Ferran Torres also forced to watch on from the bench, despite his fine recent run of form in front of goal.
